BaanRimNaam update: building out the balcony roof

We’ve been making incremental progress on BaanRimNaam recently. Mostly, we’ve been focused on building the balcony roof. There have been some small SNAFU’s to deal with due to the fact that the architectural drawings had the roof over the main balcony come down to about 1.3m high. This is quite low. So we adjusted it….

Front gate is up… finally

I’ve been waiting to have a permanent front gate for the entrance for quite a long time. But there was an inherent order of operations that needed be followed. The gate couldn’t be installed until the driveway was paved. The driveway couldn’t be paved until the land was leveled. And the foreman suggested we not…

Knuckling the excavator

In my previous post, I showed some pictures of a trench dig with our DIY excavator. I just thought I would post up some pictures of how the machine crawls around the land. I still think this is one of the funnier aspects of this machine, since it doesn’t have powered wheels. Instead, it crawls…

Digging a trench with our DIY excavator

As some of you might remember, we built our own DIY excavator back in May/June of last year. Since then, it hasn’t gotten much use. The main reason for this is that the workers that we’ve hired are more familiar digging with hand tools than with the excavator, so they seem to avoid using it….

Testing out new air pumps from eBay

I ordered 2 of these pumps from eBay and it took a while for them to arrive. But they finally arrived a week or two ago and I finally got the chance to test it out in the last few days. Both are 24V DC air pumps and the smaller one is rated at 60W…

Chickens taking a dirt bath

The picture don’t show it too well, but I guess this is how chickens bath in the dirt. The cute part is how they are all huddled together in a mass of feathers and dirt.

A comparison of plastics

3D printing is a very cool technology allowing anyone at home to manufacture plastic goods in literally any shape. (Although not quite any size… size is limited by your printer.) The kinds of materials you can print with are limited to those that have a relatively low melting point which are mostly plastics and plastics…

Travel: Mountain Float Resort

I’ve been back from Chiang Mai for a few days now, and been trying to catch up on my work and construction backlog. But I wanted to post some photos from the second resort we stayed at about an hour’s drive from Chiang Mai city for 3 nights. It was a beautiful resort called Mountain Float. The…

Floating wooden posts

One signature of our architect is something he referred to as “make the support posts look like they are floating”. We had intended on doing this for the balcony posts on BaanMae, but due to the “fog of construction”, it didn’t happen. So we thought we would give it a try on BaanRimNaam. Basically, the…

Travel: eating in Chiang Mai

In my previous post, I mentioned the really nice boutique hotel we stayed at in Chiang Mai for one night. Since half of traveling for me is eating, I figure it is worth mentioning some of the very nice eateries we stopped off at. First, we ate at a place called “Artisan” just a few…
