Ban Rim Nam Cooling experiment

Since the weather in Thailand is very hot, the roof temperature of Ban Rim Nam can get up to about 50C (inside!). (This is inside of the 1 cm insulation.) At the same time, under the house is about 29C. So we thoughht about cooling the roof to decrease the temperature inside. In this experiment…

Building a solar hot water heater

I’ve been trying to put together this project for most of the year. We finally got to it about a month ago, but I was too busy over that period to blog it. So here is a summary… I was inspired by a few of the projects on the Internet for DIY solar water heaters….

BaanRimNaam now has a fence to keep the dogs in

We finally got around to building a low fence around BaanRimNaam to keep the dogs in. We’ve been keeping the dogs inside the house at night and they go nuts playing in the morning (every morning). It will be really nice to be able to let them out and know they can’t run too far…

Composting toilet update: building some additional holding tanks

We’ve been using the composting toilet in BaanRimNaam since we moved in late in December last year, and I like it a lot. Call me weird (many of my friends have), but I really like understanding and implementing the full path of our food from growing to cooking to eating to … well processing it…

BaanRimNaam kitchen completed

We’ve finished the outdoor kitchen at BaanRimNaam and been using it for a week or two now. It has a sink and counter, UV and carbon water filter under the sink, and an induction stove and toaster oven to do the occasional cooking.

Adding worms to the composting toilet in BaanRimNaam

Back in August before we started building the composting toilet in BaanRimNaam, I mentioned that the plans we bought were designed for vermicomposting (composting with worms). But when we moved in around New Year’s I decided to just start using the toilet without the worms. Best case is that it would compost, but more slowly….

Bringing the cats home

We’ve been moved in for a number of weeks now, but we finally brought the cats over from the old house last weekend. As any cat owner knows, cats are very different from dogs. When it comes to moving them, dogs are like “cool! vacation!” But cats are like “hey, where the hell are you…

Finalizing the composting toilet

One of the most interesting aspects of moving in to BaanRimNaam was getting the composting toilet ready for actual use. Unfortunately, I left this for after dark, so the mosquitoes were chewing me up, but the process was fairly straightforward (albeit somewhat improvised). For the tank down below the house where the composting will occur…

BaanRimNaam gets light

I’m still getting caught up on the posts I didn’t get to over the New Year’s weekend. I mentioned in my last post that we moved into BaanRimNaam, but I forgot to mention that we got the lights up and running. We haven’t yet mounted any solar panels onto the roof, but when we ran…

Living in BaanRimNaam

The New Year’s holidays were a bit busy this year with getting BaanRimNaam ready to live in so that Praew’s mother and cousin could live in BaanMae, so I haven’t had a chance to post any blog entries in the past week. So there is quite a bit to get caught up on over the…
