Welcome grasshopper

We had a grasshopper hanging out on our mosquito screen all day Saturday while we were working.  It really looked just like a leaf blown against the screen if you didn’t look closely. But it was also pretty big (the body was about 10cm long). I thought it was kinda cute.

BaanLoiNaam: Thoughts inspired by a windy day

Today was the windiest day I remember on the land since we bought it and began construction well over a year ago now. I tried measuring the wind and found gusts of up to 6 meters per second: Mostly for my own records, here is a rough estimate of the distribution of wind speeds over…

BaanRimNaam: Time to start running the power

Now that we are basically done with the AC electrical wiring for BaanMae, we have begun digging the trench to run the electricity to BaanRimNaam. Since the house is quite deep into the land (well over 100 meters), this is going to take a few days to dig. Good thing we have an excavator. 🙂…

The dropping water level in the pond

According to some news reports, this is the worst drought in Thailand in the last 20 years or so. I’ve heard that the rainy season that normally starts around May will likely be delayed until August. This is good for construction since rain just makes everything more difficult. But it isn’t so good for the…

Hooking the air pump up to the aerobic treatment system

We went with an aerobic treatment system (ATS) rather than a septic tank for our sewage system because it is supposed to result in cleaner effluent and we wanted to use the treated (and post sand filtered) effluent on the land for watering (non-edible) plants, etc. (You can see all of the posts about the…

Who let the dogs out?

When we designed our fence around the land, we had to ask ourselves what kind of perimeter do we want. Our first realization was that we aren’t into feeling imprisoned on our own land, so big solid walls were out. So we decided to go in the opposite direction. We wanted a fence, but one…

Creepy crawlies

We spent some time today digging and wiring in the dirt so that we can finally get the permanent electrical hookup. At one point a rather large centipede crawled out from under some large dirt clumps. K’Tanawat was worried because apparently these guys are quite poisonous and so he proceeded to smash it. I guess…

Electrical utility inspector came by to inspect our electrical wiring

I delayed signing up for the permanent electrical hookup for quite a while. It wasn’t too urgent because we already have the temporary construction electricity, but they charge about twice as much for it. We finally got around to signing up for the permanent electrical connection and the utility company sent an inspector by yesterday….

Rambling: The labor participation rate in the US

https://commons.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Rory_sketch_-_confused.jpg Okay, I’m a numbers geek. I know this. You know this. So I will now mention that I have a hobby of reading economics and politics news. Sometimes, I think of it like my version of watching football. Just with less action and more global significance. And you are now warned: if you are…

Restaurant review: The 66 Cottage

Do you crave eating a really good slice of cake while sitting in a beautiful garden and sipping a cup of hot coffee? Praew has been wanting an excuse to swing by The 66 Cottage on Sukhumvit soi 66 because that was what she was hoping to find. And I can tell you… it was…
