Climbing on up the ladder

So, the ladder that we started building to climb up to the loft area in BaanRimNaam is nearly complete. It is more heavy duty than I expected. Maybe a little over-engineered. But it is still removable. And it is as sturdy as you can possibly imagine. But most importantly, it is incredibly functional and fun,…

We built our own push cart

I mentioned previously that I wanted a push cart or wagon of some sort to push heavy things around the land on the walkway. We saw a nice example with the workers that brought the trees. So our workers quickly whipped up a useful little push cart from a pair of tuk-tuk wheels and some…

Building a large storage shed

It was always part of our plan to build a storage shed at the end of the parking area that would also block the rain. So we planned it as the next job for the welder after the pontoons. Here it is in progress: The large metal sheets on the ground in the lower left…

First “smart light” deployed on the walkway

This has been ready for testing for a few weeks now, but I’ve been quite busy. But I finally sat down and tested out the walkway “smart light” post we built. It is working quite well. Here is a picture as it was getting dark: Actually it started raining right about then, so this was…

Giant snail

Every once in a while, we see a giant snail or slug around. When I say giant, I really mean unbelievably large. This one isn’t the largest we’ve seen, but it is definitely up there: For reference, there was a normal sized snail shell nearby. I am holding it in my fingers.

Dinner at Avanti

Praew and I decided to go back to Avanti for dinner today. After reviewing it a while back, I’ve always wanted to go back there. The food was really really good the first time we tried it. And I can confirm, it is still really really good. And the owner mentioned he is moving out…

Baan Lae Suan fair

Praew spent Saturday at the “Baan Lae Suan” fair (literally “Home and Garden” fair), where she picked up a number of cute miscellany that make BaanMae look a little more like a home. It might also give you an idea of our sense of style… I really like this guy. Look carefully and you’ll see…

New project: Building a ladder to climb up to the loft

So one feature of BaanRimNaam that is interesting is the bedroom and bathroom have a ceiling which provides a floor for a loft space up above. This can be used for storage or whatever, but does involve climbing up there. Rather than have a permanent staircase (which would take up a lot of space) or…

New Project: First flush rain diverter

Over the summer, we had a mechanical engineering intern named Chanon helping out on an experimental project. The problem is that while rain water is mostly clean, the roof it hits is often not. In addition to the dust and other pollution that collects between rains, there is also feces from birds, lizards, and other…

Funky clouds

Last Thursday, I saw an interesting cloud pattern on my way back from work. It looked like normal clouds on the lower left side, but with higher altitude flat clouds encircling them. Blue sky peaked through in a thin crescent between them.
