The new chicks for the chicken coop

We got 5 new chicks for the new chicken coop last week from Praew’s organic chicken farming class. Here they are settling in to there new home: The chain link fence keeps out dogs and other predators and the mosquito screen keeps out mosquitoes: Hopefully this new setup will work well for them.

Using a Secchi disk to measure the clarity of pond water

Here is another project I’ve had on my to-do list for a while that I finally got around to. The Secchi disk is a tool that can be used to measure water clarity. It can be easily made yourself, so we made one out of corrugated plastic futureboard and black waterproof electrical tape and a length…

Adding a ladder down into the pond from the floating house

I do sometimes enjoy a dip in the pond to relax and get some exercise swimming. (I will enjoy it more, I think, after I have a chance to test the pond water to make sure everything is safe, but I’m still working on that.) And what better place to enter the pond from than…

An interesting folding counter top in the kitchen of the floating house

The floating house is quite small, so we are thinking up all kinds of ways to reconfigure the space to keep it open and clean when we don’t need furniture cluttering things up, but still have the convenience of that furniture when we need it. So here is a nifty folding counter top in the…

Building a solar hot water heater

I’ve been trying to put together this project for most of the year. We finally got to it about a month ago, but I was too busy over that period to blog it. So here is a summary… I was inspired by a few of the projects on the Internet for DIY solar water heaters….

The composting toilet for the floating house is done

A few weeks ago, our team of construction workers finished building us a custom composting toilet for the BaanLoiNaam (the floating house). I am always impressed with their woodworking skills, and really complemented them on this one. The basic approach we are using here is based on the traditional “Loveable Loo” eco toilet as described…

Sleeping in a hammock in the floating house

We’ve gotten the welder to mount the hammock loops in the walls of BaanLoiNaam. Here is a picture of Praew trying out one of our hammocks there: Within a minute or two of starting her test, she was sound asleep and I didn’t have the heart to wake her for another half hour. Since then,…

A new garden area for the new chicken coop

I apologize that I’ve been quite busy recently and haven’t had time to post to the blog. But there have been a number of interesting projects developing since my last post. I’ll try to catch up over the next week on some of the projects. I’ll start off with a fairly major construction project that…

Composting hacienda is finished and ready to begin using

Last time I posted about the composting hacienda, the roof was up and the walls were partially done. Since then, we have finished the walls and added rain gutters and 1200L of drums to collect the rain to use for keeping the compost appropriately damp. Here are some pictures from the construction: You can see…

Putting the takob trees for the living gazebo in the ground

Less than 2 weeks ago, I transplanted the takob trees into pots of our home made compost, and they have grown quite quickly. I’m a bit concerned that the leaves of these plants don’t look exactly like the takob tree leaves. I’m not sure if the baby leaves are noticeably different than the adult plant…
