Green algae in the pond

While I wrote recently about how clear the rainwater is in the washed gravel and sand areas and in the areas overgrown with Thai morning glory, the central part of the pond has just turned a bright green due to algae in the last few days. Based on what I have read, algae needs two…

Mystery print: 3D printed boat thruster gearbox

I’ve spent the last week printing and assembling a prototype gearbox made from PLA. If you were curious at all about my mystery print from last weekend, you can see it inside of the gearbox here: The entire gearbox is made up of about 18 different printed pieces totaling about half a kilogram in weight….

Flooring installed

The floor tiles in the house are installed as of yesterday. This was the last thing before considering the construction done and the house livable other than utilities. Now we just have to finish water and electricity  installation and we are done with this house.

Pond images: The “micro view”

Most of my pictures and posts are wide views of ponds, houses, construction, etc. I think of these as the “macro views”. But the things on the land that I get the most enjoyment out of are oftentimes the small things that you have to look closely or you will miss them. Today I decided…

Mystery print

Would you care to guess what these things are? I printed up four of these yesterday. I’m not telling what they are yet. Praew thought they looked kinda like a mold for muffin cups. Then again, she made a really good kaffir lime and poppy seed muffin recently, so that probably influenced what she was…

Cooking: Kanelbullar

Praew made her second batch of Kanelbullar today. It is a traditional Swedish cinnamon roll. While we’ve never tasted any of these other than the ones Praew has made from a recipe on the web, they are really quite good. Not overly sweet like the American cinnamon rolls.

Cooking: Making a grilled cheese sandwich

I think most people raised in the US have childhood memories of eating a grilled cheese sandwich. At its simplest, it is just bread, cheese, and heat. But you can start there and move on to add anything you want. Living in Thailand, I find that it is hard to get certain American comfort foods,…

Pond water level analysis

Here is a picture of measuring the level of the water relative to the sand retention wall. You can see that the water level is about 60cm from the top of the wall. My target water level is 10cm higher than the top of the wall. But the way we built the wall, it shouldn’t…

Pond update: pumps completed and water level rising

I thought I would post a quick update about the pond construction. The rainy season is drawing near to an end, and the water level has been rising steadily. The amount of sun hitting the stagnant rainwater is leading to a fair amount of algae blooming in the pond. But I am hopeful that the…

3D printing with wood

The filaments used for 3D printing are all different kinds of plastic. Or are they? Well, they are and they aren’t. Currently, filament type consumer 3D printers can’t handle the temperatures required to melt metals, so we are stuck with different kinds of plastics, but there have been recent developments with different kinds of plastic…
