New solar installation

Having finished construction and testing of the water circulation pumps, the next step is to find a permanent power source. I’ve always been interested in the potential of solar for bringing power to any point on the land without needing an electrical grid connection. These pumps are ideally suited to solar, being almost 30x more…

Cement footings on the new house

The cement footings on the new house are a little different than on the first one. The neighboring pilings are connected together by a cement connection. Here is a picture of the work in progress:

Construction of second house begins

Finally we are beginning the second house. It is up against the canal so we call it บ้านริมคลอง (“baan rim klong” or “house on the canal”). The cement footings are mostly done so the steel frame will go up soon.

An organic looking metal welded walkway

Praew and I have been discussing how to design the walkway around the first house and the corresponding walkway roof for a few months now. We looked at different examples and nothing seemed to fit our sense of style. A few weeks back, Praew came up with the interesting idea of using a more tree-like…

Edible plant pictures

Today we swung by the land after going shopping at Villa just to check up on things. We noticed some nice looking edible plants. In particular, this bush which grows wild on the north side of our pond has some striking orange flowers: The plant is called “the candle bush” (senna alata) and based on…

Pond skimmer

Pond skimmers are devices that suck water in from the surface of the pond and run it through a net or mesh of some sort to trap debris and eject the water somewhere else (possibly passing it through a more serious filter first). I asked our workers to put one together using most of the…

Restaurant review: Broccoli Revolution

On Sunday, Praew and I had a little day date. We went to Haba Kitchen for brunch, followed by a visit to Dasa 2nd hand bookstore to do some browsing and buying, and then we thought we would swing by Agalico coffee shop and hang out in their awesome garden and read. But Agalico was closed…

First crop photos

Today I noticed that some of the first crop of plants that K’Tanawat planted on our land are starting to yield their first crop. So I thought I would share some pictures. The corn is looking really promising: And these papaya plants sprouted on their own from some discarded fruit wastes and we transplanted them…

Surprisingly nice results from cement board

Stained Shera board flooring vs real wood trim at the very top edge of picture We are currently using Shera brand cement boards for the flooring both on the interior and on the balcony. On the interior, we are using the large 120cm x 240cm cement board above the steel beams and using a laminated…

Prototype air pump

The 220V AC air pump we bought for about $60 a while back from an aquarium supply shop was horribly inefficient. From basic physics, power is equal to force times speed. For an air pump pumping air into water, you can calculate the force as the difference between air pressure at the pump, and water…
