On Sunday, Praew and I had a little day date. We went to Haba Kitchen for brunch, followed by a visit to Dasa 2nd hand bookstore to do some browsing and buying, and then we thought we would swing by Agalico coffee shop and hang out in their awesome garden and read. But Agalico was closed for some reason. So we decided to try out a nearby cafe that we passed walking from Dasa to Agalico. It was named “Broccoli Revolution“.
Here is a photo of the interior:
And here is a map:

We weren’t really that hungry, but they had an interesting vibe, so we decided to try a mezze platter appetizer.

It is really just a bunch of small dishes of things like olives, hummus, baba ganoush, couscous, etc. And pita.

Since about a third of their whole menu was devoted to interesting drinks, Praew and I ordered two of them. Interesting colors:

Mine had green apple, kale, lime, and ginger if I remember correctly. Praew’s had watermelon and maybe mint?

My conclusion? Well, it reminded me a lot of the trendier kind of health food cafe in Los Angeles. Kind of felt like being “back in LA”, except for not needing the 18 hour flight to get there. The fresh squeezed juices, the cosmopolitan menu, the modern loft style furnishings with the plants hanging from the ceiling. I give them A+ for decor.

A small gripe was that when we sat on their balcony, which was really nice, the noise of the street and construction from somewhere nearby resulted in a pretty quick retreat back inside.

My larger problem was that while the mezze was good and I enjoyed it, I think I would go to a Turkish or Lebanese restaurant if I was really craving mezze. The drinks, which I thought would be their specialty just were not very tasty. They tasted healthy but not delicious. Mine was sour and green tasting, but I can’t say it particularly tasted like much more than that. And I preferred mine to Praew’s.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m a big fan of fresh squeezed juices. I modified one of Praew’s experimental recipes and make a mean custard apple (noina), banana, vanilla, and milk smoothie at home that almost tastes like a milkshake. (No sugar added.) And I’ve had some odd ones that were really good. (I once had a lemongrass+mint drink that was probably sweetened, but I’ve always wanted to try it at home.) And then there are the normal naturally sweetened ones (without milk) like apple+orange+carrot and variations thereof.  And I’ve had various additions like ginger and kale and liked it.

But something about both of these drinks just seemed a bit watered down and missing that refreshing pop.

So? I would go back if I was in the neighborhood and craving something healthy or just wanted a place to sit and read. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to make it a destination.
