Sewage is rarely people’s favorite topic, but in a home, it is a very important one. Nothing exemplifies this more than working on the electrical wiring around the new house and realizing you really need to use the restroom. And then you remember that you can’t because the sewage system hasn’t finished installation.

Well, the toilet part of the sewage system is now fully installed. We’ve run a large sewage pipe down from the toilet in the bathroom and then turn to a straight and gradually downwards sloping run directly into the aerobic treatment system (ATS).

ATS drains treated effluent into cistern

Our current plan is to take the treated effluent from the ATS and run it through a slow sand filter and then use the hopefully almost perfectly cleaned up water for irrigation on the land. Once we finish the basic utilities (clean water, electricity, sewage), I will begin experimenting with slow sand filters next.
