BaanRimNaam update: structure going up quickly now

We finished the floor structure in the last few days, and today they started welding the actual building structure. Things are moving quickly now, and the hope is to be installing the roofing on Tuesday. Then it will begin to really look like a floating house. 🙂

Pile driving the old fashioned way

Have you ever wondered how pilings were driven into the ground without large construction machinery? I saw the workers driving some 3m pilings into the ground for a temporary structure a few weeks agi and I thought it was interesting. Basically, they dig as far as they can easily dig, drop the piling into the…

The tomato plant from Little Shop of Horrors

Praew planted a few plants in her keyhole garden in mid October. Apparently these plants really like our compost, because they have grown quite large in a matter of about 4 weeks. In particular, Praew is telling me that the big spiky one in the foreground is a tomato plant: The leaves are about 20-30cm…

BaanLoiNaam: Structure of the floor in place

I took this picture today of the progress of welding of the floor: The smaller cross beams are mostly in place to support the fiber cement board flooring.

Fluid simulations

I’ve been tinkering from time to time with numerical simulations of cloth, fire, clouds, etc. for almost 25 years now. In fact, it was a side project I was doing in college to simulate fire that got me hired as a software developer in the film industry back in the mid 90’s. I haven’t done…

BaanLoiNaam update: The “foundation” is complete

With the 5 pontoons completed and in the water, the next step was to assemble the frame to hold them together. The only difficulty for us here is the lack of a crane. If we had a crane of some sort, we might have built the floor frame on land and hoisted it onto the…

New project: kitchen

Praew has always wanted a dedicated kitchen where she could put her mixers and ovens and other cooking and baking paraphernalia. Since we’ve been going for tiny buildings each for a dedicated purpose, we’ve begun construction on a dedicated kitchen building. So that Praew can spend a bit more time with her mom, we are…

Composting toilet nearly completed

The composting toilet is nearly completed. The wooden toilet box has been completed and now has a glossy finish, and the toilet seat has been attached to it. The glowing blue center is the light from down below reflecting off the PVC pipe in the center. This effect will be gone once we close the…

Driving a BLDC motor

I’ve been wanting to experiment with brushless DC (BLDC) motors for some time now. Today, I finally got the chance to write the microcontroller firmware to do the logic. We are still waiting on some electronics to build the 3 half bridges needed to do the power side. But we pretty much finished the control…

Another illustration of the organic biofiltered pond idea

If you remember from some previous posts, the idea behind the biofiltered pond is that when the water is pumped (slowly!) through the sand in the sand filtration area, a thin biological layer of “good” bacteria and other small organisms digest and break down the viruses, “bad” bacteria, algae and raw nutrients (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus,…
