Four out of four walls on the floating house completed

The workers have finished the fourth wall on BaanLoiNaam now, so all of the walls are completed. Here is a picture or two of the wall going up: Now, the wall is complete, and if you look at the top, there is a “chong saeng” or small window to let light in at the top…

Keeping the pontoon jig in good order

When we made the pontoons for BaanLoiNaam, I made sure that all of the pontoons were built (and mounting holes drilled) using the same jig so that they would be interchangeable. I noticed the jig rusting on the ground the other days and asked the workers to clean it up and add another coat of…

Mounting solar panels on the floating house

We installed a number of fairly standard solar mounting rails on BaanLoiNaam last week: The goal is to have space for at least 12x 300W solar panels. Initially, I’m only planning on installing 8 of them, which should yield approximately 12-14 kWh of electricity per day on average. This would be more than enough for…

Three out of four walls of floating house completed

As of Friday, three out of four walls on BaanLoiNaam are completed. Now we just have to get the forth wall and the sliding doors and it will be a closed building.

BaanLoiNaam: More progress on walls, doors, and windows

The second of four walls is now completed on BaanLoiNaam. It is now really starting to look like a house: The nearer wall with the door in the middle is the way out of the house to the outdoor bathroom area. The roof overhangs this so it should be mostly sheltered. The dream idea is…

Pond water level has peaked

At the end of the rainy season in late September and early October, I decided to close the valve on the pond overflow pipe to let the water level go up a little bit higher and see what would happen. The idea was to get a little more water in so that the evaporation over…

BaanLoiNaam: Turning the house 90 degrees

Last week, I noticed that the orientation of BaanLoiNaam when the workers were building it had the longer roof facing west. Since BaanLoiNaam is designed for a completely disconnected operation, it will be getting all of the house electricity from solar panels on this roof. And being in the norther hemisphere, the sun is generally…

BaanLoiNaam: one wall completed

We have now finished one of four walls! Just three more to go. 🙂

BaanLoiNaam: Walls and windows going up

The walls and windows are starting to go up in BaanLoiNaam. They started by installing just the windows: Then the built the walls around them: Also of interest you’ll notice in some of the above pictures, the white Shera Board for the balcony areas around the house are partially installed: In case you are wondering about…

Synthetic thatch roofing

We experimented with very thin thatch roofing over polycarbonate on the pump sheds in the idea we might use this for BaanLoiNaam eventually. I like the traditional rustic look and the improved thermal insulation properties of thatch compared to bare roofing. But our biggest reluctance to doing this for a house we will be occupying…
