We’ve made quite a bit of progress in this last week regarding the composting toilet for BaanRimNaam. First, the toilet itself is taking shape:
The bathroom has been tiled, and is mostly ready for the toilet also:
But most interesting, I think, is the construction of the chamber under the house to keep the composting “humanure”.
The dolly for sliding the “humanure receptacle” was completed earlier in the week:
Here it is with a 200L drum on top:
So we cut off the top of the drum at the correct height and experimented with wheeling it in:
There is a loop on the near side of the dolly that will allow a hook on the end of a stick to reach in and pull it out.
We’ve also begun work on setting up the receptacle tank to allow air to flow in and through the composting materials:
At the bottom is some scrap acrylic from one of the doors. It will sit up about 10cm from the bottom of the tank and will have holes in it for any excess liquid to drop down as well as allowing air to move around. In the center will be a PVC pipe with more holes drilled in it to allow air to move all the way up through the center of the tank, even when it is full. More on this when it is further along.
The workers also finished the chamber where this tank will sit:
The near side will have 2 doors which are finished but not mounted yet. The tank can be wheeled in and the doors closed making a nearly air tight chamber. Then a duct with a fan will pull the air down through the toilet chute and out the right side of the chamber. Hopefully this airflow will guarantee that no smells move up into the house.
My target is to have all of this completed in the next few weeks.
