Yesterday, K’Tanawat finished digging the trench for the water overflow pipe in the pond. The idea is that there should be a pipe at exactly the height such that if the water level in the pond ever gets over this level, we want the excess to dump out into the canal bordering our land.

We decided  to add a ball valve on the pond side so that we could choose to open and close it. Mostly this would be in the event that the canal water level ever got higher than this level during flooding.

One little interesting tidbit is that since the area near the canal had been planted with coconut trees many years before, the ground was a solid mass of coconut roots. I once read that coconut trees are different from most types of trees in that they don’t dig roots deep down into the soil but rather the roots go out sideways and intertwine with nearby coconut tree roots forming a solid mat that is only a few meters deep.

This made digging even with the excavator quite difficult. By hand, it would have been a real pain in the back.
