Surprisingly nice results from cement board

Stained Shera board flooring vs real wood trim at the very top edge of picture We are currently using Shera brand cement boards for the flooring both on the interior and on the balcony. On the interior, we are using the large 120cm x 240cm cement board above the steel beams and using a laminated…

Flooring installed

The floor tiles in the house are installed as of yesterday. This was the last thing before considering the construction done and the house livable other than utilities. Now we just have to finish water and electricity  installation and we are done with this house.

Excavator upgrade: hydraulic flow limiters

Testing out the hydraulic flow limiters When we finished building the excavator a while back, it worked fine but seemed to move a bit too quickly on some of the directions. At best, I had to be very careful to barely open the valves, but at worst it was dangerous to anyone or anything nearby….

Sewage treatment

It might not be the most glamorous part of building a house, but sewage treatment is a pretty important one. The first house is mostly done and we’ve had a big hole in the ground for the sewage treatment system for a while and now it is time to start installing. Unfortunately for us, there…

House update: Mosquito screens, balcony rails, and sand

Just a quick update about the house. The big construction is done, but there is a fair amount of detail work now. We’ve decided to use roughly the same design for the mosquito screens that we did for the acrylic windows. (Wooden frame sandwiching the screen material.) Stylistically, it goes well with the wooden house….

How much does a house weigh?

How much does a house weigh? I’ve been asking this question ever since I began pondering the option of a floating house. If it weighs too little, then every time a resident jumps up and down on the balcony, the house will rock noticeably. If it weighs too much then flotation becomes a problem. I’ve…

Pilings going in for house #2

We’ve begun work on the 2nd house on our land. I just thought I’d post a quick photo: The pilings have mostly gone in and we dug the soil up a bit to put in the cement footing at the top of each cluster of pilings. This house may be a bit heavier than the…

Designing a crazy floating house

I’ve been pondering the idea of making our house a floating house. We have a big pond. A floating house doesn’t need pilings. And I have this crazy idea that the house could be made disconnected in the sense of an autonomous propeller driven vehicle. So it could rotate to track or avoid the sun….

Excavator update: It’s alive!

Busy week last week. A lot going on at work. So I didn’t have a chance to post these pictures of the first working test of the excavator until now. Last week, we finally got the hydraulic hoses and the coupling between the engine and the hydraulic pump purchased and installed. We even painted the…

Acrylic window prototype

The construction workers took my simple window design and built a quick prototype in about a day: Acrylic window prototype Here is a wider view: I think it looks pretty nice. And it feels rigid and strong enough, too. Any thoughts or opinions? Now that I like the prototype, we still have to make sure…
