On BaanRimNaam, we’ve decided to experiment with a gable window that can open for air flow.

Here is a picture of the gable on the house with no window in it:

Since the roof is fairly high, a window up there would need some kind of mechanism to be opened by a person standing on the floor. After considering louver windows, I decided that it would be relatively complicated to construct and would have so many moving pieces that it would likely break. I also considered a simple window that can open inwards with a stick for support, but realized that this creates a problem with rain. If a window opens inwards, then when rain that hits the outside of a window and drips down will drip inside the house. But if the window opens outwards, then the window frame will keep the water from coming in.

So then we will need some mechanism to open the windows outwards. After considering possibilities, I’ve decided that a hinged window with the hinges on the top and a pulley mechanism is probably the simplest approach I can come up with.

We will need four of these: one for left and right for both sides of the house. So I asked the workers to begin building a single one for experiment.

As of yesterday, they were in the process of building the frame:

I’m pretty excited to try it once the pulleys are installed to see if this is going to work or not.
