I am quite fond of ceiling fans. (Did you notice how I avoided the pun from the word “fan”?)

I am fond of fans in general and as the weather gets hotter, I tend to crank up the fans rather than turning to an air conditioner. It is uncomfortable when you come from the ridiculous heat outside into a chilly blast of air from the air conditioner inside. And if you find yourself going out and in multiple times, it is downright unpleasant.

Top this off with the fact that air conditioners generate condensation and attract dust, and you have a natural recipe for moldy, bacteria filled unhealthy air.

Ceiling fans don’t blow in your face like a floor fan does. And it doesn’t take up any floor space either. And the wiring is run above your head, so there are no wall plug cables to trip over.

But I really wanted to use DC ceiling fans so we could power it from solar, and the DC ones I could find on the internet all looked really crappy.

So I ended up in a kind of compromise. We decided to buy decent looking AC 220V ceiling fans for now, run AC 220V power cables to them, and use that for the time being. Then, when I can clear out a number of the other higher priority projects, down the road I can work on trying to hook up an inverter to run the AC ceiling fans off of DC power.

So when we were shopping at HomePro for the walkway lights, we decided to pick up a single ceiling fan for trying out the mounting and everything. Here is the box:

So we had the welder weld on a pair of U shaped steel pieces onto the ceiling beam in the center of my mother-in-law’s bedroom, and we attached the fan mounting to this:

Next we will run the electrical wiring to here and install the fan.
