I was walking around the land today to check up on the progress of the multiple construction projects we have going and I noticed that K’Tanawat had let the chickens out of their coop to get a bit of exercise in the little chicken run we have around the outside of the coop.

I guess they are settling in and seem rather happy with their lot. I asked about their lives prior to moving to our land and apparently they were kept in those disturbingly small boxes that farmed chickens are kept in. Now they probably think they’ve won the lottery and bought a mansion.

In addition, the pack of stray dogs around our land seem to have grown used to the smell of the chickens. At first they would sniff around the coop and sometimes bark at the chickens, which was probably more than a little stressful for them. But now they dogs basically ignore the chickens altogether. Hopefully, they’ve identified their smell as part of the normal smells of the land and they have gone from “intruders”/”potential food” to “family we must protect”.

So the reduction in stress seems to have resulted in eggs being laid. We have now had about 3 batches of eggs in the last week for a total of 7 eggs.

A quick internet search suggests that egg chickens should lay on average about 0.75 eggs per day. With 10 chickens, this results in about 50 eggs per week. That is once they all start laying again. That is a lot of eggs. Time to start thinking of ways to use them and/or give them away to people.
