Swimming ponds and liners

I wrote before about the completion of the pond digging and since then I’ve begun work on the first test pump for the wetland filtration system. Sourcing the washed gravel and sand to use as a growing medium for the plants in the biofilter has turned out to be a bit difficult, so I am…

Excavator update: It’s alive!

Busy week last week. A lot going on at work. So I didn’t have a chance to post these pictures of the first working test of the excavator until now. Last week, we finally got the hydraulic hoses and the coupling between the engine and the hydraulic pump purchased and installed. We even painted the…

Acrylic window prototype

The construction workers took my simple window design and built a quick prototype in about a day: Acrylic window prototype Here is a wider view: I think it looks pretty nice. And it feels rigid and strong enough, too. Any thoughts or opinions? Now that I like the prototype, we still have to make sure…

Acrylic windows

The exterior of the first house is completed except for the windows. We’ve been exploring options, but we are compelled to use custom windows due to the design of the house. This seems to be the result of a chain of design decisions. One of the primary design goals of this house is to make…

Bamboo update: One month later

In an earlier post, I was monitoring the growth speed of a new bamboo plant. I found that the first shoots were growing at about 13cm per day. But, of course, that rate would have to slow down at some point. One month later, here is a picture of the same plant: It measured at…

Random: Old pictures of Mee Seua

I keep seeing this picture in my gallery every time I upload a blog picture, so I figured I’d post it. This is our newest cat named “Mee Suea” (Bear Tiger) when we first got her. She is about a year older now. Still quite clumsy for a cat, though.

First house really looking like a house now

So the first house is looking nearly complete now. Pilings, balcony, floor (not including tiles), walls (including interior), and roof are all done. Have a look: We just finished adding the vent under the roof yesterday: Now, all we have left are the windows, the floor tiles, the water and electricity, and bathroom toilet/sink/shower faucet.

Excavator fully assembled

The assembly of the excavator is mostly complete now. The welding is done. The hydraulic pistons are mounted on their bushings. Engine, hydraulic pump, and hydraulic tank are all mounted. We were unable to easily source the bucket teeth yet, but we welded on thick pieces of metal that we may grind down to sharpen…

Random: American Fried Rice

For those of you new to the interesting delights of Thailand, I figured I’d introduce you to one of these delights. It is always interesting being in a foreign land and seeing how they look back at the country you came from. So in that vein, I bring you… American fried rice! While I am…

Pond digging mostly complete

Just figured I’d send a quick pic of the pond digging. This should be done in a few days and then we will begin the biofiltration zone construction.
