For those of you new to the interesting delights of Thailand, I figured I’d introduce you to one of these delights.

It is always interesting being in a foreign land and seeing how they look back at the country you came from. So in that vein, I bring you… American fried rice!

While I am not a big fan of it, Praew orders it from time-to-time, as she did tonight. The French fries seem to be a particular special addition at this restaurant downstairs from my office, but the sentiment is the same. Fried chicken, sliced fried hot dogs, a fried egg, rice fried with ketchup and raisins… and now with French fries! How can you get more American than that?

My Thai friends are always surprised to find out I’ve never seen this dish in the US before coming to Thailand. According to Wikipedia, it came about during the Vietnam war when they were serving Americans stationed in Thailand.

Then again, who am I to judge? I ordered the Japanese curry rice to which I asked them to add sea bass stir fried with black peppercorns (“pla krapong pad prik thai dam”). Go figure.
